SynbiCITE – Fieldfisher Seminar: Synthetic Biology and IP: ‘What’s holding you back?’
- London, United Kingdom
Overview
SynbiCITE, in association with leading European technology and life sciences-focused law firm Fieldfisher, is running an IP Masterclass for Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) at universities working in synthetic biology and related fields, academics, spin-outs and start-ups.
Titled ‘Synthetic Biology and IP: What's holding you back?’ the aim of the Masterclass is to encourage academics, potential university spin-outs and TTOs around the UK to better and more quickly exploit IP around synthetic biology so we can create more value in the UK from exploiting our world-class R&D in synthetic biology from universities.
The day, running from 10:30-14:30 on Tuesday 14th November 2017, will follow a programme outlined below:
Synthetic Biology and IP: What's holding you back?
- The challenge: the need for speed when protecting and exploiting IP
Speeding the pace of IP filing and exploitation can be critical to securing a return on innovation, particularly in a University setting. Synthetic biology is a highly competitive field yet many promising innovations get stuck inside the universities and organisations that conceive them, never making it to market; the first to file IP rights will usually reap the lion's share of the resulting rewards. - What can IP do for me?
IP can be used to achieve a wide range of commercial goals extending well beyond the classic uses of securing market exclusivity for your product and obtaining royalty income from IP licensing. - Thinking beyond traditional ideas of IP ownership and licensing – making your IP work for you
Several IP ownership and licensing models exist which can be tailored to your commercial aims. What are the pros and cons of the key options and when, and how, can patent pooling be used to foster collaboration? - What's holding you back?
Are you facing obstacles in protecting and exploiting your IP? What practical steps can you take to overcome these hurdles? This will be a facilitated group discussion under Chatham House rules. We will provide tips and resources to help you speed the pace of IP decision making within your organisation for the benefit of multiple stakeholders.
